Heaton Tennis Championships 2017

Tim Evers —

Nichica doubles up & Nat goes one better at this years Heaton Championships

With a very competitive field of 16 female and 10 male competitors, this years Heaton Tennis Champs were action packed with some brilliant matches.

From the start, our defending boy's champion Nichica (Room 14), reminded us that he would be the front runner for the 2017 crown, dropping only 3 games on route to the final. The remaining boys pack were battling it out in fiercely contested encounters, each making their intentions clear that they wanted the chance to take the title. The final was set, with Quinn (Room 5) winning a thriller against Henry (Room 6) to progress. With a dominant display, Nichica started well, and never took his foot off the gas, claiming a deserved victory 6-1 6-2. Our top 4 finishes in the boys' competition can be found below:

1. Nichica (Rm 14)

2. Quinn (Room 5)

3. Luke (Room 18)

4. Lachlan (Room 6)

Our Ladies' draw was led by last year's runner up Nat (Room 10), who was focussed on going one better in 2017. Nat shot out of the blocks with a 6-0 win in her first match, setting the tone for the tournament and cementing her place as the student to beat. It was very difficult to predict Nat's finals opponent, with Grace (Room 15), Zara (Room 14), Georgia (Room 12) and Maddie (Room 11) all playing beautifully, and pushed each other to the limit. Zara held her nerve in a close semi final encounter, and won the chance to challenge Nat for first place. This was a match we have seen before, with both girls representing Heaton at last years AIMS Games Championships, and playing many times at club level. Nat was too strong on this occasion, as she played extremely consistently and freely to take the title 6-1 6-1. Our top 4 finishes in the girls' competition can be found below:

1. Nat (Room 10)

2. Zara (Room 14)

3. Maddie (Room 11)

4. Georgia (Room 12)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our participants, and  The Elmwood Tennis Club for their continued support in providing such wonderful facilities. This tournament would not be possible without your generosity.
