80 Years of Music Celebrated at the Christchurch Music Festival

Janiene Hill —

On the 6th November at the Christchurch Town Hall, the Heaton Normal Intermediate school choir and musicians entertained a captive audience along with eight hundred other students from Christchurch Schools.

The Music Festival turned 80 this year and the theme was "You're the Voice". Sadly it was the final Music Festival for the Musical Director, Patrick Shepard. He has retired from this role for now. He will be replaced by Rachel Wilford.

The highlights of the evening were the special groups, in particular, our beautiful cellist, Ichiko,  who performed a cello solo with the full orchestra using wonderful expression and flair. Other highlights included the full choir's version of the songs "You're the Voice " and "Welcome Home", a tribute to the March 15th victims.

This year, as always, we had a number of students involved in the special senior choir, orchestra and concert band. These were:

Senior Choir: William M

Orchestra:  Katia A, Anna G, Jacob B, Ichiko K, Abigail L

Concert Band: Elena A, Bryan C

The evening was very entertaining and it was wonderful to be back performing in the Town Hall. Our students sang and played beautifully. They were a credit to our school. Well done everyone.
