Term 2 Hāngī

Pippa and Lucy (Room 19) —

On June the 21st, a Hāngī was held at Heaton Normal Intermediate to celebrate Matariki - the Māori New Year.

The food for the Hāngī was brought into our school and  shared with Year 7, Kapa Haka and extension te reo Māori students. The food could be described as a combination of divine chicken, stuffing and incredible fry bread. It was a memorable day for all of the students and teachers that took part.

Rhodes students were invited to make fry bread with Mishayla (Room 3) and her Mum. According to Mishayla a Hāngī is a family tradition and they make fry bread regularly.

The feedback from the students was very positive. Jamie (Room 19) said that the food was well cooked and that the outcome of students was incredible. Savannah (Room 19) said the food made her feel happy and the warmth of the food was comforting in her tummy! She recommends the vegetarian meal for anyone that has never had Hāngī food before.

The Heaton hāngī was a big success and we hope that we can celebrate Matariki with a hāngī in the years to come.
