ANZAC Commemoration Assembly

Sarah Cumming —

On Tuesday 2nd May the Heaton community came together for our annual ANZAC commemoration assembly.

This was an opportunity for us to honour Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who have served and continue to serve our country during times of conflict, past and present. Our head students, George and Alex, led us very ably during this tribute.

Second Lieutenant Emily Bowler from the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment was our guest speaker. Currently, she is a platoon commander responsible for the training, welfare, safety and professional development of 30 soldiers. She is also a full-time university student studying science and commerce and has done four years as a reserve. An incredible role model, Emily's words of wisdom and insight into the significance of ANZAC Day, was really meaningful and inspirational for us all.

Another highlight were the contributions of our students. Over 150 Kapa Haka students performed a powerful performance of Tōku reo tōku Ohooho.

The Heaton Voices Squad and band ‘No Strings Attached’ performed the well-known song ‘Pepeha’ by Six60. It reminded us how our sense of place anchors us in challenging times.

One of our Heaton dance groups presented a dance called ‘The Journey’. Mrs Hill developed choreography to represent the different impacts war has on the lives of those who serve and those who remain behind. It was a beautiful performance.

Sophia R2 led us with The Ode and 30 seconds of silence.

A special thanks for your generous poppy donations. They will be passed onto the RSA to help improve the health and well-being outcomes for New Zealand's veterans of all ages.
