Two Raw Sisters and a Giraffe

Jenny Halligan —

The Two Raw Sisters visited Heaton on Wednesday 3rd May. Chelsea and Duncan Rm 6 recall the day.

The Raw Sisters are two sisters that specialise in cooking, they are visiting schools all around Christchurch with Harold the giraffe. The two sisters introduced themselves as Rosa and Margo. They taught us about how many fruits and vegetables we should eat every day. Margo and Rosa told us that we should eat at least 2 servings of fruits and 5 servings of vegetables daily. We learnt that a serving is about the size of your palm, fascinating right?

The sisters started off by explaining the dishes that they were going to make. They soon informed us that they would let the teacher choose the two volunteers to help them make the food. The volunteers had some guidance from the two sisters while making the Apple Crumble Porridge and Butter Chickpeas.

Apple Crumble Porridge

Firstly one of the volunteers grated an apple and the other volunteer was measuring out a cup of rolled oats while the Raw Sisters were explaining some of the ingredients that they were going to add to the porridge and some things that can be a good substitute. They then added half a cup of shredded coconut, 2 cups of milk, 2 tablespoons of some sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup and also some raisins or sultanas. The volunteers added a tablespoon of ground cinnamon and ginger. After they did that; the Raw Sisters let the volunteers put all of the ingredients into a small pot and mixed it until it was well combined. Then they heated the stove and let the pot cook over medium heat for 5 to 8 minutes. While waiting the sisters asked different people what their favourite toppings for porridge were. Some said blueberries, almonds, and much more.

Butter Chickpeas

For the butter chickpeas; the sisters let the teacher choose two different volunteers. First, one of the volunteers grated a carrot while the sisters were teaching the other one how to dice an onion and I must say they did very well. One sister then put 1 and a half cups of rice on to cook and then added 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan over medium heat, then they added the diced onions then sauteed it for 5 minutes. After, they added all the spices and tomatoes, coconut cream, chickpeas and some vinegar. After that, a volunteer mixed all the ingredients until it thickened.

In the end, the Raw Sisters gave the four volunteers a sticker each and let everyone have a small sample of either the chickpeas or the porridge.
