It’s official: Heaton has a great school library!

Jane Boniface —

A recent Ministry of Education research report showcasing best practice in NZ school libraries included Heaton Intermediate as one of 13 schools from across the motu identified as having a successful school library.

The “Great School Libraries in Aotearoa: A Qualitative Study” examines the positive impact a well-supported school library can have for learners.

The four main outcomes identified from having a successful school library were:

  1. Improved reading, writing and digital literacy

  2. Development of research skills

  3. Development of knowledge beyond academic learning

  4. A sense of wellbeing, belonging and community amongst students

The report goes on to detail how the school libraries in the research study achieve these outcomes.

The Foreword of the report, written by SLANZA (School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa), notes that there is a wide body of research linking literacy levels and academic achievement to the access students have to libraries. They believe school libraries are a necessity for our tamariki, not a luxury, and are hopeful this report will encourage all school principals and BOT’s to ensure their libraries are well resourced and valued.

In the meantime, in a time when increasing numbers of schools are doing without a school library and a trained librarian, you can rest assured that your child has access to both at Heaton!
