Matariki Performance

Chrissy Kereama —

At the end of last term our kapa haka rōpū was invited to perform at Christchurch Girls High School with the kapa haka groups from Christchurch Girls High, Paparoa Street primary, and Cobham Intermediate. We gladly accepted this opportunity for a performance and got to work on our program. With only a few sessions with Matua Sonny and Tui we pulled together an amazing programme.

We started with ‘Tōku Reo’, a waiata about our love for te reo Māori, followed by ‘Ka Pioioi’, a waiata ā-ringa action song - which talks about the love we have for our own people.

Finally we sang our finishing song ‘Matariki’ a waiata that indicates the star constellation that tells us when our new year begins in Te Ao Māori.

We would like to thank our kaiako and our tūmuaki Mr Griggs as much as we would like to thank and acknowledge Matua Sonny and Tui for being amazing tutors. Without them we wouldn't be nearly as good as we are.

We also want to thank everyone and their whānau for their ongoing support. Without all of you we wouldn’t have had such a successful performance. Nō reira tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.
