Defiant Girl

Fiona Taylor —

A new sculpture has been placed in the centre of the financial district of New York. Year 8 student, CJ, has investigated this work, why it is there, what it is all about and produced her own photograph in response.

When I first saw  this sculpture it spoke to me.

"Why am I here, what am I all about, what do I mean?"

I was curious to know more.

This new statue , known as 'Defiant Girl' by Kirsten Visbel is located on Wall Street ,  the heart of the financial District of New York. This statue is of a young girl standing proud and strong. Several metres away is the large sculpture of the 'Charging Bull'. The girl faces the bull , defiantly. The fierce Bull represents power and wealth, yet the girl stands confidently, unafraid.

'Defiant Girl'  appeared on Tuesday 7th March, the day before International Women's Day. She speaks to women, saying that all females have a right to any job, as much as men, which is why she is in the  financial centre of New York. By portraying the figure as a young girl she is also stating that being young , female and weaker should not prevent you for standing up for your rights, what you believe in and from having ambition.

A fundamental human right is access to education, it is through this that all children  might achieve this. I feel I am very lucky that my caregivers are able to support my education. We should all be grateful for the opportunities that we have . We should all have the courage to be like the 'Defiant Girl' and stand up not just for what we believe in but also for the rights of others, our friends, our families and even those we do not know.

My personal response to the artwork was my attempt to portray a defiant expression. It was harder than you might think!

"It is harder to stand against the wind than it is to flow with it"
