Bubble Photography Competition Exhibition

Fiona Taylor —

On Tuesday 23rd June we opened the Bubble Photography Exhibition in the LRC

Whilst in Lockdown our Year 8 students were working on a number of Visual Art projects online, some of which explored the topic of Tūrangawaeawe. They were to consider what it was that they were doing during lockdown that made them feel connected, safe, well and happy.

Also during Lockdown ‘Giving Seed of Love’ ran an art competition called ‘Unity in the Home’. There was a photography section which I entered, and won!

This inspired Mrs Taylor and I to create our own competition, and so the Bubble Photography Competition was born. It has been really exciting seeing all the students entering the competition.

We have so many talented kids here at our school.

Thanks to everyone for getting in behind this competition.

We have been so fortunate to have been supported by Photo and Video International, Merivale and by Janneth Gill, who provided her expertise in judging the photographs and providing the feedback. Enormous thanks to Jane Boyle for organising our sponsorship and arranging the printing. Thanks also to Mrs Cumming and Miss Rogers for helping on the night.

On Tuesday evening about 90 guests came to view the photographs. They were welcomed by myself and Kate. The overall winner, Thomas Room 15, was announced by our guest Judge Janneth Gil. His photo was called 'The Hug'. Thomas was presented with his prize, a Fujifilm Instax Camera and gift pack. He then cut the Bubble Cake. Janneth spoke about her how impressed she had been by the standard of the work and encourage everyone to keep on photographing. There were many wonderful photographs and choosing the winner was extremely hard. Thomas's photo captured what was most important during lockdown.

He tangata, he tangata, he tangata

It was our family relationships that above all else helped make us feel safe and secure.

It has been a privilege to have been able to have an insight into so many Lockdown Bubbles. The comments accompanying the entries were beautiful in their honesty and observation. The huge whanau turnout was testament to all the support and encouragement that they gave  to their tamariki.

Mrs Knight commented how wonderful it was to see something so positive come from Lockdown.

After all the other certificates were presented we were able to taste the lovely homemade baking made by Art Extension as they served tea and juice.

The show will remain up until later next term, please come and look.

To celebrate the end of Lockdown all the Bubble Photography Competitors went on the field to blow real bubbles!

Some of the competition photograph are shown below, however, all the photographs and their text may be viewed on the Tūranga Discovery Wall. Text search 'Bubble Photography Competition'
