CAIMS Winter Tournament

Kate Henderson —

The CAIMS Winter Tournament took place at various sporting venues around Christchurch during week 5 of term 3. We were well represented with over 160 athletes from Heaton competing in badminton, basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby sevens, squash, table tennis and volleyball. We were so fortunate with the glorious weather and are so proud of the growth of every team and the attitudes of our student-athletes.

A big thanks to all of our wonderful parents who came out to support our teams and our fantastic staff members for their time, energy and commitment!

Congratulations to our teams who finished in the top three of their respective tournaments.

Rugby Sevens - 1st

Girls Hockey - 1st

Mixed Hockey - 1st

Netball - 1st

Girls football - 2nd

Girls Football

The girl's football team had an outstanding tournament winning their pool on the first day and progressing through some hard-fought games to the final. With 90 seconds to go, Heaton held the lead only to have South Intermediate equalise and then go on to win on penalties. Excellent leadership on the day from our team Captain Clara and the team are looking forward to some hard training in the next few weeks to prepare for our first venture into the Koru games. Mr Griggs

Open Football

From a coach's perspective, Heaton Kōwhai really did themselves and He Tīwai Mātauranga/Heaton proud over the course of the two-day open football tournament. Pool play on day one brought a win, a loss and a draw with only one goal conceded. Day two saw Heaton Kōwhai compete against three further teams and when the quality and physicality of the matches stepped up, so did the team. Attitude, sportsmanship and effort were excellent. Energy and enthusiasm were seen from the first whistle of the tournament to the last and no doubt some great memories will have been built from the team's time together. Mr. Cooper.

Table Tennis

The table tennis teams performed well against some very tough competition. Heaton Kowhai placed 12th and Heaton Karariki placed 8th. Mrs Halligan

Volleyball

The tournament was very well organised and we felt very welcomed by the staff and students. Both teams found this a learning experience as the tournament progressed they became more confident and performed better. Kākāriki was in pool C and eventually played off 9th to 12th position. They won their games on the last day to finish 9th. Kōwhai were the less experienced team and by day 2 managed to win a game. Overall, both teams performed well progressively and behaved very well. Mr Naidoo

Netball

Year 8A netball team won all 8 games at the CAIMS tournament. The girls played with enthusiasm and determination, encouraging each other to play to their strengths. The sportsmanship displayed over the two days was well rewarded after such competitive games. Miss Christie

Hockey

A very successful tournament for Heaton hockey! The Girl's Team and the Mixed Team Heaton Kōwhai were undefeated and won their respective tournaments. Heaton Kākāriki also had a great tournament placing 6th out of 12 mixed teams. Mrs Eames

Rugby

Following on from a very successful CAIMS tackle 10 aside Tuesday sport competition we entered two teams from Heaton into the two-day Sevens Rugby Tournament. Seven minutes of seven speedy players showing how fast they could score the most points. No frills, just run it straight! While it was a hard day at the office for one of our teams we congratulated the other that won the tournament overall. We were thankful the weather stayed rugby-friendly.

Well done to the squad of remarkable players who represented Heaton with great sportsmanship and positive play. It was great to see the Heaton hooped jerseys still being worn with determination and grit. Mrs Clarkson and Mrs Boyle were very proud of you all. Many thanks to the supportive parents who cheered us on from the sidelines. Also thanks to Primary Sport Canterbury and Kirkwood Intermediate for hosting the opportunity to get out there and play the game we all love.

Mrs Boyle and Mrs Clarkson

Basketball

Our girls and open basketball teams had a great two days at the tournament. Our goal was to show growth and improvement with every game, and we did just that. We had some tightly fought battles on the basketball court and I was so impressed with the leadership and respect that was shown by our players. A big thank you to Steve and Andrew for their support over the two days!

Mrs Henderson

Squash

The squash teams came 4th and 5th place. They demonstrated great sportsmanship and Heaton values. Everyone had a great day!
