Heaton Cultural Club Aims to Leave a Lasting Legacy

Sarah Cumming —

At the end of last year, the Cultural Club decided they wanted to design a multicultural signpost to show new Heaton students and our community that our school values multiculturalism and diversity.

Last year, the club researched materials, dimensions, and the design of the structure. The current goal is to collaborate with a sign writing business so that the prototype can be brought to life. Students will discuss costs, materials, and the practicalities of the design structure.

The prototype consists of multiple signs that represent countries or cultures from around the world.  Did you know that we have approximately 21 different cultures at Heaton? Did you also know there are 6909 languages in the world?  We pondered as a group what this meant for the design.

After much debate,  we realised that not every language could possibly be represented on the signpost. So our consensus was the overall symbolism makes it clear that all cultures and languages are valued at Heaton even though only a few will make it on the post.

In our meetings with Mrs. Knight, we have proposed the location for the structure. Please take a look at our diagram, which outlines where we think is an ideal place.

The Cultural Club believes this will be a great project to work on for the remainder of 2017. It will be a great legacy for all future Heaton students.

We will keep you updated on how the project is progressing.
