Heaton Environment Club Plantings

Joan Green —

The Heaton Environment Club was busy in Term 1 planting rengarenga (New Zealand lillies) at the school entrance.

Reflection on Term 1 by Amelia and Ms Green

One of the projects the Environment Club has been doing this year is planting rengarenga (New Zealand lilies) at the front of the school. We chose rengarenga because they thrive in either sun or shade. They will produce stalks of creamy white flowers in the spring and last many years.

The lilies were part of a project that was started last year during spring planting. We ordered them in September, but unfortunately, they didn't arrive before the summer holidays! Luckily for the new members of the club, they were able to help plant and learned some excellent new skills in Term 1.

To make sure the lilies grow to their full potential, the club has to water them twice a week. If the club continues this they will grow 85cm tall and will bloom beautiful white flowers in the spring.

In Term 1 we also spent a fun lunchtime helping Mr Brown organise plants that we repotted last year and grew here at Heaton in 2021 for the Eco Action Trust. This organisation uses student volunteers to grow native seedlings and plant them in the red zone. This term we’ll be transplanting another batch of tiny seedlings for next year’s planting.
