SCAPE Re:ACTIVATE sculpture competition finalists

Fiona Taylor —

Heaton finalists have their work on display at Tūranga

Congratulations to Jemima room 16 and Harry room 7, our two finalists in the SCAPE Re:ACTIVATE Aspiring Artists competition, Junior Section.

Every year SCAPE Public Art run a sculpture competition.  The winners have their work made and displayed in Christchurch. This year the winners' work may be seen at Hack Circle.

The current theme for the competition will run for three years and is 'Rock: Paper: Scissors'. This year we started with 'Rock'.

The SCAPE Educator, Josie Whelan, came to Heaton to run a workshop in the Art Room that explored this theme, and the underlying concept of Tūrangawaewae.

There were record entries this year. The judges commented on the thoughtful concepts behind Harry and Jemima's designs.

Harry

'Sanctuary'

This is a stone wall korowai inspired by the work of Chris Booth. The woven stone envelopes you and creates a protective shelter. It incorporates at pātiki design representing being able to provide for all.

Jemima

'Together as one'

Together as one connects to the theme because the rising rocks are intertwining as one. Together they are standing and protecting each other. They are standing (in) their home, where they belong.
