Success for Heaton students at Canterbury-Westland Science Fair

Jarrad Brown —

Lucy, Lucy and Corben (Room 15) all received multiple prizes for their Canterbury-Westland Science Fair entries.

The Canterbury-Westland Schools' Science and Technology Fair has been held in Christchurch for over 30 years and throughout this time has grown considerably in size and reputation to become one of the premier Science and Technology events in New Zealand.

Two science enrichment teams from Heaton have been working throughout the year to produce an in-depth investigation for the science fair.

Lucy  and Lucy  produced "Aotearoa's Antibiotics". They investigated plants used in traditional Maori medicines and then extracted essence from them to test their potential to be used as antibiotics.

For this project they won:

Best exhibit Health Sciences

3rd Overall Year 8 Science

Corben  produced "Into Thin Air". This project investigated the best method to prevent evaporation from irrigation ponds in the Canterbury region.

For this project Corben won:

Trophy for "Enthusiasm and passion for his project"

3rd Place Environment Canterbury award

Many thanks to the organising committee of the Canterbury-Westland  Science Fair and the generous sponsors for providing the opportunity to celebrate some great young scientists.
