Hosting an International Student

Sarah Cumming —

Are you interested in being a homestay caregiver for an international student?

Heaton is a signatory to the Code of Practice 2016 for international students. This means we can enrol students from overseas. Enrolments can be for varying periods of time from one term through to one or two years. Currently, we have four international students enrolled at Heaton.

We thoroughly enjoy having the opportunity to include international students in our school community. We believe our students benefit by learning and developing alongside students from a wide variety of cultures. As you know the concept of 'diversity' is one of our cherished Heaton values.

Some of our international students opt to add to their kiwi experience by living in a kiwi home. Heaton chooses to organise this accommodation for these students and their families. Homestay caregivers who decide to host a student are paid $250 per week.

Currently, we have three Heaton families who have taken up this opportunity. The benefits have been positive for all involved in this experience. We greatly appreciate the support and generosity of these families.

As international students choose to enrol at different times throughout the year, we need kiwi families who have completed the homestay caregiver application process so that the international student enrolment can be confirmed.  We like to have a register of interested homestay caregiver families.

If you are interested in hosting an international student please refer to the Guide for Homestay Families (document attached), which outlines some of the basic expectations for homestay caregivers.  If you are interested in taking this further, please complete the International Student Residential Caregiver Application (document attached). In the event that a student does require accommodation we can then ask you if this suits your current family situation.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact Sarah Cumming at cummings@heaton.school.nz
