Christchurch Art Gallery Artist workshop

Fiona Taylor —

Kate's day with Hannah Beeher and Yannamaries's day with Nina Oberg-Humphries.

The Art Gallery has run a week of Artist led workshops for High School students. Our Art Extension was offered the opportunity to attend. Kate Room 11 chose Hanna Beeher's workshop and Yanamarie Room 7 chose Nina Oberg-Humphries. The students spend the day looking at artwork in the Gallery and then producing their own work.

I chose to do this workshop because I wanted to learn more about art and I was interested to find out more about Samoan culture. Nina greeted us in Samoan, "Talofa Lava", we introduced ourselves and replied "Talofa Lava" too. We went upstairs and Nina showed us some of the Samoan artworks in the Art Gallery. She let us look around for ideas we could use.

Once we were done we went downstairs to create our own. Nina brought a lot of different decorations that we could use. I created a matching bracelet and necklace. I enjoyed my time with Nina at the Art Gallery. Everyone was really kind and it was fun to create your own work!

On Wednesday the 12th of May I spent the day at the Christchurch Art Gallery to do a course with Hannah Beeher. She is a New Zealand-based artist and has artworks all over New Zealand and some internationally she has been an Oliver Spencer trust award recipient and in 2016 she won the Parkin prize for drawing. At the art gallery, we did lots of different drawing exercises such as drawing upside down, drawing without looking, and measuring with a pencil. I really enjoyed my day at the art gallery.
