World Fair Trade Day

Fiona Taylor —

Heaton has been a Fair Trade School since 2010. As part of our commitment to Fair Trade we help support Trade Aid on World Fair Trade Day each year.

Trade Aids' move from Merivale to their temporary shop in the  ReStart Mall has unfortunately meant there was not room for our annual Fair Trade Art Exhibition this year. However, we did find a small space to show one wood cut by Anton Room 12, and hand out some cards he had made. His art work Illustrated the Children's Human Right 'Protection'. Anton's  text 'No Harm' encapsulates the theme so succinctly. If everyone in the world aimed to do 'no harm' the world would be a happier and safer place to live in for all of us.

Vera, one of our Art Leaders, volunteered to help at the shop on World Fair Trade Day. Vera's role was to talk to the public and hand out samples of Fair Trade chocolate and baking made using Trade Aid ingredients. You may find some of the recipes here.

I had the amazing opportunity to help out the the local Trade Aid store on Fair Trade Day. When I walked in,I was amazed by all of the beautiful handmade products, it was like walking into a new world of what I knew as “Fair Trade”.

After snapping back into reality, I was kindly met by Gaylis, the store manager, who then showed me to where Mrs Taylor was. Then I was taken outside with Jo (one of the volunteers) who explained to me what I was supposed to do. During the time I spent there Jo and I engaged with customers and encouraged them to try some of the Fair Trade chocolate. We explained to them the process of chocolate tasting.

I was lucky enough to be able to try some of the delicious chocolate and meet some of the lovely workers.

I cannot wait until I will be able to volunteer and work for the store Trade Aid! :)
