Extension Science Field Trip

Jarrad Brown —

On Tuesday, some of the extension science group traveled north, in search of fossils on the coast near Waipara.

Fantastic weather and a great location made for a very enjoyable fossil hunting trip to Glen Afric in Waipara.

Our goal was to find some evidence of our region's past, with most of the geology on the beach fitting into the Miocene Epoch (5-24 million years ago).

Some very clear evidence of fossilized clams, scallops, crab legs and starfish were found. Unfortunately, despite cracking a lot of concretions, we didn't find the remains of Tumidocarcinus giganteus. This is a giant crab found in the area that is prized by collectors and may have to be a goal for next year's extension group to find!

Thanks to Mr Greaves for being a part of making our trip a success.
