Kia ora whanau

As an intermediate school in which half the school’s students change each year, we are very mindful of being very proactive in ensuring an inclusive, positive and supportive culture every new year. We have had three school wide events so far this year that have supported and encouraged Year 7 students and new staff in building this Heaton spirit.

Firstly the mihi whakatau that was held on the first day to welcome new students and staff, was a wonderful way to set the scene for a exciting and fulfilling 2017 for everyone in our school community. Thank you to Chrissy Kereama and Sarah Cumming for all the organisation.

On our Fun morning held on 10 February, the school was awash with colour and creative dress. The weather was very kind to us and students thoroughly enjoyed the various team activities. The water games were of course, the most popular. Thank you to Tim Evers for all the overall organisation and our staff for their energy and enthusiasm, taking activities that really appealed to and challenged our students to work together in teams.

A special assembly, mihi whakatau, was held on 21 February to thank Taua Daph, Fiona Taylor and Chrissy Kereama for the long hours of work that went into designing and making the two beautiful korowai (cloaks), which are to be worn on special occasions by the Kapa haka leaders and heads of school. All our students demonstrated considerable respect and appreciation for the hard work that has gone into these very special Heaton korowai. Many thanks for the funding provided by the 2016 PTA who supported this project.
