Last weekend our Tūhono Kapa haka group travelled to the Town Hall for the Tūhono Competition for intermediate schools.

We (Room 6 and Room 9) dedicated our buddy class time this term to doing something to help out the local community. It could have been to clean a certain area, like a park or look after elders or animals but as a group, we decided we wanted to help some local primary school students and their teachers.

In Visual Art/Toi Ataata we focused on the themes ‘Kirituna’/Resilience and Wellbeing/Whakapūawai. Using the metaphor of a Kākahu we looked at what was important to us, our strengths and how these protect us and help create our identity. We experimented with a wide variety of materials, techniques and ideas, with reference to artists from around the world. There was a particular focus on ceramics as a medium and the importance of clay/uku in human civilisation and its connection to Papatūānuku. Students were encouraged to broaden their understanding about how the Visual Arts communicate issues and ideas.

On Monday, 28th November, a group of Heaton Minecraft enthusiasts led a staff meeting outlining their project developed over the last two terms with the help of Nathan Scott, an ICT specialist from Cyclone.

On Wednesday, the 9th of November Year 7 house leaders George R15, Asher R7, Alex R7, Bri R9, Ruby R12, Oscar R12, James R11, Josephine R16, and Maisie R14 were invited to attend the ‘Be Inspired’ leadership conference at Christ's College. They recount their experience.

On the 30th of November, we had our end of year music concert which showcases some of our students' musical talents.

They call it the beautiful game. It's the game with no boundaries no matter what culture, race, nationality or age. This week some Heaton staff and students proved it as they competed for the Staff vs Students Challenge Cup!

And I’m not talking water slides! The “summer slide” is a well documented decline in reading achievement that children can experience while they are away from school over the long summer break.
