Young Writers Workshops at Heathcote Valley School
Write On Creative Writing for Young Writers is an extension class for all students - a lesson in creativity through written expression. Our children find their own voices through poetry and storytelling. For several years, HVS has run very these popular workshops with Gail Ingram for Year 4-8 children, here at school.
All teachers from Write On School For Young Writers are writers as well as teachers, including Gail who is widely published in journals and anthologies throughout Aotearoa and internationally.
Write On teachers are experienced in introducing students to the world of writing and encouraging the practice of the craft. In workshops, the students learn how to use words creatively and express themselves through metaphor and story – skills that carry across all subjects. Students join other like-minded creatives to explore word-building, character-building, plot development, as well as experimenting in different genres, such as fantasy, memoir, ghost story, comic strip, and poetry. Gail also guides our students in their writing through to publication. We have had a number of our young writers published in Write On! magazine (see some examples at the end of the article).
Workshops are no bigger than 12 children allowing Gail time to work one:one with editing and feedback.
HVS does subsidise the cost of these workshops but there is a small fee for parents to contribute. There is no obligation for children to do these workshops for a whole year as we ask for interest term-by-term.
If you are interested in these workshops for your child in 2024, please let Rachel know (rachelo@hvs.school.nz).
