Registering and expressing interest in Heaton events

Tim Evers —

Interested in getting involved in sporting events or the arts at Heaton? Make sure you know the process and expectations.

I would like to take this opportunity to send a warm greeting to our new Heaton families, and to welcome back our returning Year 8 cohort. Getting to know a new school system and way of doing things is an exciting challenge for our Year 7 students. For our returning Year 8's, getting back into the swing of things quickly, and establishing positive routines can also prove to be a tricky prospect.

There are an amazing variety of opportunities on offer at our school in both the sporting and arts arena. These opportunities will be outlined in our Heaton daily notices, and uploaded to our Heaton Sport and Arts Blog. The Heaton Sport and Arts blogs can be accessed via the school website or by clicking the direct links below:

A major priority of ours at Heaton is to develop our students independence, personal organisation and resilience. We want our students to leave us as independent and lifelong learners who can take responsibility for themselves.

At Heaton, students have the personal responsibility to register their interest for events, tournaments, teams and extra-curricular programmes e.g. rock band. All opportunities that we offer have registration deadlines. This is for various reasons that include providing sufficient time for our school to register groups with outside agencies, organise staffing, coordinate adequate training and tuition times, pass on important information to caregivers in a timely manner etc.

In order for your son/daughter to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities available, they are responsible for the following:

  • Reading the following Sports Blog page: New student Information
  • Carefully checking the daily notices each day and keeping some form of diary of what and where things are happening at school. The daily notices are read each morning, however can also be accessed at any time via the Heaton website.
  • Checking their school gmail account once per school day, as some opportunities will be directly emailed to students.
  • Keep regular track on both the Arts and Sports Blogs
  • Sign up for events/opportunities within the allocated timeframe (before the deadline).
  • Seek help if they do not understand, know what and where to access information or have any worries prior to the deadline day.
  • Check the daily notices if you are absent on an in-school holiday so you do not miss out on opportunities when you return.

Intermediate school is an incredibly exciting adventure and we feel very lucky to work with you (our community and caregivers) to help develop these fantastic individuals. We are all here to support your child through this process and look forward to a brilliant 2019.
