Success in the Canterbury Kids Lit Quiz!

Jane Boniface —

Heaton performs well in the "sport of reading".

The Kids Lit Quiz originated in 1991 sparking a global competition between nine to twelve year old bookworms. Teams of four compete to correctly answer 100 literature questions, based on anything from the classics to poetry to contemporary fiction to Manga graphic novels!

At the beginning of Term 1 every student at Heaton took a Kids Lit selection test and the top six Year 7 and top six Year 8 students were invited to join the Heaton Kids Lit Squad. And then the training commenced! The squad began a reading spree, making sure all sorts of genres and types of literature were covered. At our meetings we took part in book chats, practised working in teams, and did some Kahoots to further test our knowledge. After 5 sessions we had our two teams of four students each, with three excellent Reserves on stand-by.

The teams were:

Team 1: Michael - Room 15, Isabella - Room 6, Sophie - Room 15, Sophie - Room 12

Team 2: Charlotte - Room 7, Maddy - Room 8, Alex - Room 18, Evie - Room 18

Reserves: Ashlyn - Room 6, Sadie - Room 3, Toby - Room 3

On April 13th we jumped into the school van and set off for Tūranga, the venue for the Canterbury Kids Lit Quiz 2021.

We did very well!

Heaton Team 1 achieved a podium finish with third place, while Heaton Team 2 achieved a very respectable ninth place (50 teams from around Canterbury took part).

Gaye Roberts (Squad Manager) and Jane Boniface (Squad Coach) were really delighted with both teams’ success, and the whole school is proud of us. It was an awesome experience!
