Year 8 Market Day

Christina Just —

Market Day was a school-wide, community-based project inspired by our Year 8 inquiry learning studies during the previous two terms. It opened our eyes to the horrendous Human Rights issues, specifically child slave labour, going on outside of our everyday lives. This made us desperately want to help make a difference for those in such forlorn situations.

So we began to work together on a beneficial project, ‘Market Day.’ This involved collaborating in groups to design and create products to sell using upcycled materials. Each group came up with unique stock to sell to students, staff and families.

Due to the marginal weather, Market Day was set up in the hall with each group given a space to assemble their stalls. The room quickly became crowded with a variety of colourful and creative goods.

After the setup was complete the customers started pouring in. Most products were a huge success and some stalls sold out immediately! After the initial shopping spree, the crowd began to thin and the money was tallied. Together we raised an enormous amount of money to donate! Market Day was an exciting and meaningful event for everyone involved.
