Specialist Teaching at Heaton

Katy Smeele —

Food Technology

Mrs Smeele teaches us food technology at Heaton. I was really looking forward to doing food technology this year as last year we had to miss it because of COVID. I really like the way that we get to work in groups with our friends to make and eat our own creations. Already this term we have made an outcome using bananas. My team made banoffee pie. We are doing a mystery ingredient unit for the first 4 weeks to help us remember the skills that we learnt in Year 7. We can choose anything to make with the mystery ingredient, as long as we planned and are organised. Mrs Smeele is teaching us how to do this so we have success.

Hard Materials Technology

Mr Greaves teaches us Hard Materials at Heaton. Although we have only had a few lessons so far, we are really enjoying planning and creating our acrylic cell phone holders. Mr Greaves has already taught us how to use tools and machines that most of us haven't seen or used before. For example, we have learnt how to use the sandblasting equipment and how to put patterns on the acrylic. I am looking forward to seeing the outcome of the projects we are working on during this term.

Science

Mr Brown teaches us science at Heaton. In these pictures we are testing the amount of energy in different chip types. We like that we get to do experiments and try lots of things that we would not normally do in our everyday lives. We feel confident doing these experiments because we do it in a safe environment with Mr Brown supervising. We are looking forward to being able to do our own scientific investigation this term in an area of our own choice. We have chosen to investigate what brand of battery makes a radio control car go the fastest.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts/ Toi Ataata with Mrs Taylor is new and exciting. I got to learn, and use, techniques with clay/uku that are more enjoyable than expected. There is a fun freedom with clay which makes it new and interesting for everyone. We have also learnt about how significant clay is culturally and environmentally. I am looking forward to trying to do more with clay to make some really awesome art here at Heaton in the Visual Art room.

Physical Education

Physical Education is taught to year specialist classes by Mr Evers. So far this year we have had two specialist classes and have been learning quick thinking and that sport is also about using your brain. We have had a lot of fun so far and we can't wait to do more.

Performing Arts

We have been working on drama in performing arts so far this year. We have done some work around freeze frames and playing stereotypes. We also explored the convention of Voices in the Head. Today we learnt about writing lyrics and we started to learn how to put music to our song using chords on the ukulele, keyboards and percussion instruments. It has been a busy start to the year.
