51 Memorial Leaves

Fiona Taylor —

The first Year 8 Visual Art Rotation coincided with the second anniversary of the Mosque tragedy.

As the memorial service last year was unable to be held, due to Covid, the second anniversary this year was even more significant. We had looked at a number of art works that commemorated events or issues by producing items that corresponded to the numbers involved. The White Chairs installation represented the number of people killed in the Christchurch Earthquakes. Two years ago Heaton Art students made 64 ceramic Maui Dolphins to illustrate how many were left in the wild.

Each art student printed a Magnolia leaf from our Heaton Mosque Memorial Tree into porcelain. These were cut out and formed into a waka-like bowl. In our display there are 51 to represent the number of lives lost.

Wa alaikum salaam.

And peace be on you too.
