Science Trip to Waikato University

Katherine Ewen —

This year, two Year 9 classes went to Waikato University on a science field trip. We explored the campus, made some orange oil cleaner and learned about multiple important environmental issues.

First of all, we made an orange oil cleanser using the processes of distillation and separation. We completed these processes by using a complex chemistry apparatus.

Next, we toured the university. We saw the science department, library, and student center, giving us a taste of university life. We were also shown to the food court and main seminar area where we enjoyed lunch.

Our final session focused on plastic pollution and acidity in the ocean. We learned how the oceans have become more acidic, and this was then demonstrated by dropping dry ice into water to show how the pH levels change. The university staff shared solutions like recycling, reducing plastic use, and developing biodegradable materials.

The day was full of eye-opening activities, from making our own cleaner to understanding plastic pollution. It was a very interesting and exciting experience that we all enjoyed.
