Timeline of Women Breaking Barriers in Sport
A whole heap of firsts in history for women's sports...
1900
Women first competed in the Olympics. The sports they were allowed to play were golf, tennis, croquet, and sailing.
1915
Swimming for women was first recognised as a sport.
1922
Track and field events were offered for women.
1928
The summer games in Amsterdam saw the debut of gymnastics.
1976
Women play basketball for the first time at the Montreal summer games.
1982
Women competed in several sports including, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, and tennis at the NCAA national championships for the first time.
1991
China held the first women's world cup tournament for soccer.
1996
The Women's National Basketball Association is founded (WNBA)
1998
Curling and ice hockey debut as Olympic medal sports.
2007
It is announced that women are to receive the same prize money as men for tennis at Wimbledon.
2012
More women than men are sent by the US to the Summer Games in London.
2017
A protest was made by a women's hockey team by announcing they will boycott the world championships if their wages weren't raised.
