Teaching and Learning Update

Suzie Brace & Campbell Wood —

The Teaching and Learning whenu at Hamilton Girls’ High School has been bustling with activity this term, as senior students diligently complete their Internal Assessments while actively participating in various curriculum pathway opportunities.

The term has been marked by a series of enriching events and engagements aimed at shaping their academic and career journeys.

Senior students have been immersed in the critical phase of their Internal Assessments, a pivotal component of their academic journey as they prepare for NCEA qualifications. These assessments not only test their subject knowledge but also hone their skills in research, critical thinking, and independent study — all essential for their future endeavours.

Complementing their academic pursuits, students have been actively exploring different curriculum pathway opportunities. A highlight has been the series of university visits and open days, where students gain firsthand insights into tertiary education options. These visits are crucial for helping them make informed decisions about their future academic paths and potential career trajectories.

A significant milestone this term has been the introduction of the first round of CAA testing, focusing on the new Literacy and Numeracy requirements for NCEA Level 1. This testing aims to ensure that students are equipped with essential literacy and numeracy skills fundamental to their academic success and future professional pursuits. The second round of testing is scheduled for later in Term 3.

Parent-teacher meetings have played a crucial role in facilitating constructive dialogue between educators and families, ensuring a collaborative approach to student support and academic progress. These meetings provide a platform for discussing individual student achievements, challenges, and strategies for further improvement.

We are looking forward to another busy Term 3. Students will have the opportunity to gauge their preparedness for the end of year exams through the School Exams in Week 6/7. Our course selection process begins with students making decisions about their subjects for 2025. Students will have the opportunity to engage with a range of outside providers at our Careers Evening on the 15th August where they will be also able to investigate all the different subjects we offer at our kura.
