From The Principal's Desk
Acting Principal Craig Scrimgeour reflects on our busy Term 2, and looks forward to what is shaping up to be an exciting Term 3.
Term 2 has been a very busy time for our kura with a multitude of activities, trips, tournaments and festivals that ākonga have participated in and represented our kura with pride. It is a great time to acknowledge and thank volunteers and staff who gave up their time to make these things happen.
Participation beyond the classroom ensures young people are faced with diverse challenges and responsibilities. At Hamilton Girls’ High School we offer an assorted range of activities in the Arts, Cultural and Sporting arenas to cater for all students and abilities. Signing up to an activity requires a commitment to be made and a willingness to see it through to the end. The persistence and resilience that come from not opting out are essential qualities.
If your child has not yet involved herself in activities beyond the classroom then I would encourage her to do so. Remember, opportunities exist in the wider community too. Many employers and tertiary institutes are looking for well-rounded individuals, where academic prowess, although important, is only part of the whole package.
A number of ākonga are involved in the upcoming HGHS/HBHS production MAMMA MIA! They, as well as the staff and volunteers, have been working extremely hard during rehearsals in preparation for what will be an incredible show. I would like to encourage our community to support this production by purchasing tickets to the show and encouraging others to attend. Tickets are on sale now, and you can find all the key information at this link: https://www.hghs.school.nz/mamma-mia-production/
As we prepare to move into Term 3, there are a number of key events to be aware of. Course Selection for 2025 opens at the start of Week 3 and closes at the end of Week 7 for our current Year 9 - 12 students to select their courses for next year. A Careers Evening will also be run in Week 4 to assist with the decision making process. The Senior Practice Examinations (mock exams) run during Week 6 and half of Week 7. This is an important time for senior students to undertake assessments in a formal situation in preparation for the external examinations in Term 4. Winter Tournament takes place during Week 7 and we will have a number of our premier sport teams traveling around the country to participate in tournaments. There will also be a myriad of other events and activities taking place throughout the term.
This will be the last newsletter for the term. The term break is a great time to have a rest, refresh, and to prepare to embrace the second half of the year strongly.
