Young Singers In Harmony Barbershop Regionals 2024

Kassy Cao —

Our Barbershop Chorus and quartets competed at the Young Singers in Harmony regional competition on Monday 10th June, and came away with some commendable results.

Starting off the day were the quartets. With a total of 18 quartets competing on the Sacred Heart Girls’ College regional stage, three of these quartets represented Hamilton Girls’ High School. The first of the three was ‘Oxymoron’ (Lily Burgess-Munro, Charlize Fourie, River Park, Meadow Park), who performed ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘At Last’. The second HGHS quartet was ‘Fourtunes’ (Sophia Bankers, Georgia-Ray Fatupaito-Pooley, Frankie Waldron, Heidi Moore), who performed ‘Mr Sandman’ and ‘All I Do Is Dream of You’. The final HGHS quartet to cross the stage was ‘Doorstep Harmony’ (Gloria Potgieter, Kassy Cao, Lizelle Stols, Annelize Stols), who performed ‘Super Trouper’ and ‘What a Wonderful World’.

Following the quartets were the choruses. Our 35-piece chorus, ‘Uptown Girls’, was the first to compete, performing ‘Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News’ and ‘Feed the Birds’. The chorus performed spectacularly to a large audience who were very supportive and congratulatory towards our singers.

At the awards ceremony, ‘Oxymoron’ received second place in the Upper Voices Quartet category, which is an outstanding result for a newer quartet. They also received the Isotonix Quartet award for the Top Novice Quartet. Our Chorus, ‘Uptown Girls’, received second place in the Upper Voices Chorus category, coming in behind winners Sacred Heart Girls’ College. Congratulations to our performers!

All of our groups have now qualified for the National YSIH Barbershop convention in September, when they will travel to Wellington for a broader and more intense scope of competition. A special thanks to our wonderful Barbershop director Jane Martin, and to Mrs Dickinson for their continuous, unwavering support of our Barbershop chorus.
