NCEA Achievement 2023

Marie Gordon —

All three NCEA level targets set for 2023 were highly aspirational, particularly because 2022 results reflected the addition of learning recognition credits as a result of disruptions in learning due to Covid. While we have not achieved our targets, we are above the national average.

To reflect on our data, all staff have been asked to reflect on our teaching pedagogy, use of evidence and relational teaching strategies. The following questions have been posed to all staff:

  • How do we best engage our students to maximise their chances of success?

  • What do we collectively and individually do well that we need to keep doing?... start doing? ... stop doing? ... improve doing?

  • In what ways do we need our students to do better?

  • What will be our collective and consistent messages to our students to support this?

  • What key messages do we want parents to support that would help us in our work?

Drawing attention to our present rates of achievement, the overarching aim is to have a good awareness as a school of the educational context we are in so that we can strive for even more positive outcomes and improved academic success for our students.

ATTENDANCE is linked to achievement. There is clear correlation between being a regular attendee and academic success at HGHS. For instance, 75.7% was the average rate of attendance at Year 12 and the overall pass rate at Level 2 was 80.8%. We continue to look at strategies that will improve student outcomes.
