Hamilton Girls' High School students win big at the Waikato 48 Hour Film Festival!
HGHS filmmakers participated in the much loved 48 Hour Film Festival taking away some of the top prizes!
This year HGHS had two school teams and an independent student team enter into the 48 Hour Film Festival Competition. Filmmakers have 48 hours to write, produce and edit a short film.
This year our teams were nominated for lots of awards and were able to take out several.
"After Words" by Insomniac Studio was an HGHS entry that included Te Aniwaniwa Leefe, Natasha Bainbridge, Chloe Dangawen, Tara Edmonds, Jakeita Klenner, Ngamihi Lyndon, Beth McNaughton, Isabella Shanks and Morgan Van Loggenberg. They were nominated for 8 awards. In the end they took out "Best High School in the Waikato" along with "Best use of sign" which was one of the things that had to be incorporated in all films across Aotearoa. The girls cleverly used sign language throughout the film earning them the win!
Along with this, their film's lead actress, Ngamihi Lyndon, earned the award for "Best Actor" - beating out all other entries across the Waikato (not just other high schools.)
"One Way or Another?" by Marked - Rebecca Yuan, Aisha Skinner, Kylah Tane-Edwards - was an independent entry made by students. This film was also nominated for many awards. Rebecca Yuan, Head Girl, took home "Best Director" - an absolutely outstanding achievement - beating out all others in the Waikato. Along with this, their film came in second place for the region.
The students, parents and community should be proud of the efforts made by these young women. It is important that the voices of our wāhine are heard in spaces that have traditionally denied them access. Keep up the great work ladies!
