Big Sing: Choir Regionals 2024

Kassy Cao —

Our HGHS Choir recently competed at the Big Sing choir competition, where they got to immerse themselves in the exhilarating environment and listen to the talents of 19 other Waikato/Bay of Plenty choirs.

A bus ride to Tauranga meant an early start for our choir, Mana Wāhine, on Thursday 13th June. After watching 13 choirs, Mana Wahine took to the stage at the Holy Trinity Church, performing ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’, a choral arrangement of ‘Grandma’s Hands’, and ‘Mana Wāhine’. Our singers were well supported by accompanists Nisha Moorfield and Jera Murray, who played piano and guitar respectively, as well as percussion.

The Big Sing gala concert took place later in the evening, all choirs that competed on the day performed one song from their repertoire to a public audience. The church was packed and the energy was incredible. Our choir performed ‘Mana Wāhine’, which was met with an abundance of applause from the audience.

Mana Wāhine performed with pride and conviction, and received a ‘Commended’ award at the end of the night — a fantastic end to the competition. A very special thanks to our amazing director Jane Martin, and to Mrs Dickinson for the time and energy they have invested into our choir this year.
