HGHS students out and about exploring career pathways
The Careers Department continues to offer a wide range of experiences to assist all students with their future pathway decisions. It is never too young to begin the conversation about who you want to be.
Girls with Hi-Vis
Year 11 – 13 students had the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the construction and infrastructure sector over 3 days in May/June by participating in the Connexis Girls with Hi-Vis event https://fb.watch/s2AejjoD0I/ The industry visits included WEL Networks, Fulton Hogan and Mercury Energy Karapiro Hydro Power Station - where students engaged in a wide range of practical activities from cable jointing to putting on the PPE gear required for working on roading sites. They spoke with a range of female employees currently working in each area to understand the pathways into their roles from school and also the future opportunities available.
Waikato Trades Academy
This year we have nineteen Year 12 and 13 HGHS students attending various Waikato Trades Academy (WTA) Construction, Manufacturing, Electrical, Hair, Cafe Skills and Farming courses at WINTEC or on a local Waikato farm.
The skills learned have ranged from stripping wires and making extension cords, to cutting, bending and welding metal, using heavy machinery, helping to rear and tag calves, move stock, drench cows, ride motorbikes, as well as washing, braiding, styling, treating and tinting hair, and learning how to bake in a commercial kitchen. We are very proud of all the girls and all the skills they have learned this year!
Gateway Work Experience
A Gateway Work Experience placement is a great way to identify whether that industry is a viable option for your career and life beyond school. So far this year, we have placed 70 students into various work experience placements including automotive, aviation, beauty, hospitality, primary school teaching, ECE, law, traffic management, hairdressing, tourism, retail, real estate, painting and decorating, farming, youth work, turf management, community health, personal training and equine vet services. We have many contacts in the Trades and would love to put our students into some trade-related placements. If you would like a 5 day work placement with a builder, electrician, plumber or something trades related, please come and see Mrs Pearce in the Careers Office. A huge thank you to all our employers who so gladly host our students and are so very supportive. We could not offer these amazing opportunities without you.
