HGHS Premier Waterpolo Success

Sophie Matai'a —

The HGHS Premier Waterpolo team have placed 1st in the Waikato and 8th in New Zealand this season.

The team traveled to Wellington to compete in the NZSS Waterpolo Nationals. They started off the tournament well with a good win over St Mary’s, 9-3. The girls then played outstanding waterpolo in the following two games against St Cuthbert's and Rangitoto College, fighting to the final whistle. They went down to St Cuthbert's 14-9 and lost 9-5 to Rangitoto, who were eventual winners of the tournament. With 7 out of 8 out of the team in Covid recovery and only one sub on the bench, it was a massive four days of competition for all of the players. Unfortunately, the team lost the next couple of games, all by very small margins, but they played incredibly well coming away with 8th place in NZ. Top 8 in the country is an awesome achievement girls, well done!

After returning to Hamilton, the team then competed in the Waikato Secondary School Regional Competition finals, where they had been undefeated all season. They had a promising win over Waikato Dio 17-1 in their semi-final, to advance to the gold medal match. With an outstanding game the girls proudly came away with the gold, to become champions of this competition once again. Awesome mahi girls! A special mention to goalie, Ashleigh Devine and player, Alex Matai’a for being awarded MVP goalie and MVP player for this competition.

As a premier team, most of these girls have played together for the past four years. A huge congratulations and farewell to the four Y13s who have played in this team since Y9, we will miss you!
