A message from the editor

Alex Matai'a —

Welcome to issue #7 of Hamilton Girls’ High Schools' very own student magazine ‘Lionheart.’ In this second edition of 2022 we explore the theme of Breaking Barriers and what this means to us.

In the year 2022, it is empowering to look back to the barriers which have been broken through our history, but as young Wahine looking forward we know that there is so much more change that needs to be done. We welcome you to join us on this journey in discovering the barriers broken in our history which has shaped the society that we live in today.

As a woman in Gen Z, it terrifies me to see women's fundamental rights taken away across our world. I worry that we are taking a step back in a time that should bring progression for our society and for us as women. Tune in and read along throughout this issue as we share our thoughts on what breaking barriers means to us, as well as identify monumental women of history who have helped us to progress to where we are today. Let’s learn to educate ourselves with the women of history so we may become the women of the future… we are the change. The barriers we face are for us to break. It truly does start with us.

And lastly, to my girls, WE DID IT! You can definitely say it's been a busy term, but we made it through. Lionheart 2022, signing off from the academic council: Johanna, Bianca, Milan, Tahlia, Naima, Stella, Lily, Claire and Alla.
