A Culture of Belonging: Highlights from Our Vibrant School Term

Victoria Trenwith —

School culture isn't just about mission statements and handbooks. It's the beating heart of our school community, a vibrant tapestry woven from shared experiences, a sense of belonging, and ever-strengthening links between students, staff, and whānau.

This term has been a whirlwind of such experiences, showcasing the incredible talent, dedication, and spirit that makes our school unique.

Let's take a victory lap through some highlights!

The term kicked off with the annual School Cross Country, where students pushed their limits and cheered on their peers. House spirit was clear and evident during the inaugural House Talent Quest and the energy continued to build as we joined forces with our brother school, Hamilton Boys' High School (HBHS), for a combined HGHS & HBHS Talent Quest Final – a true testament to the strength of our cross-school whanaungatanga.

The excitement is already building for our upcoming collaborative production of MAMMA MIA! with HBHS. As the term draws to a close, rehearsals are well underway, with students from both schools pouring their hearts into bringing the energy and joy of ABBA to life onstage. The combined talents of our Drama, Music, and Dance Departments promise a show-stopping performance. It's set to be a highlight of the upcoming term, a powerful testament to the collaborative spirit that thrives between our two schools.

Culturally, we have soared this term. Our Kapa Haka roopuu Te Maurea Whiritoi secured a Top 9 placing at Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa, the prestigious Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition held in Nelson. Their powerful performance was just stunning, and a true celebration of the talents of our rangatahi Māori.

Closer to home, the Year 13 Ball “Garden of Light” was a night of elegance and celebration, marking a poignant milestone for this year’s graduating class. Musically, our choir Mana Wāhine performed at the Big Sing Regional Competition, while the Uptown Girls Barbershop Chorus and our HGHS quartets achieved outstanding success at the regional Young Singers In Harmony Competition, displaying a true harmony of dedication and talent. This term also saw our thespians take the stage at the National Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition in Wellington, showcasing our dramatic talents.

Learning has extended beyond the classroom walls with our vibrant Language Weeks, providing immersive experiences and igniting interest in other cultures amongst our student body. We also embraced Te Ao Māori with our school-wide Matariki celebrations, acknowledging the significance of this Māori New Year.

The winter season has seen our athletes excel across a broad spectrum of sports. From the camaraderie of rugby on the pitch to the fast-paced action of netball on the courts, our students have continually displayed exceptional sportsmanship and determination. The dedication of our athletes, coaches, and managers has not only brought home victories, but also embodied the school's commitment to fostering a well-rounded and inclusive sports programme for all.

These are just a few snapshots of what makes our school culture at HGHS so special. Each event, each performance, each competition strengthens the bonds that tie us together. It's in these shared experiences that we discover new talents, build lasting friendships, and forge a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the classroom walls. As we move into the next term, let's carry this spirit of collaboration, celebration, and cultural appreciation forward, creating an even more vibrant tapestry of school life.
