Scanning electron microscopy in the HGHS Science Department

Graham Sinclair —

In Week 4, Term 4 we were fortunate enough to be loaned a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), by the University of Waikato. This device uses a beam of electrons to create images to a far greater level of detail and magnification compared to standard light microscopes.

Around 400 Year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to see how this advanced and expensive piece of equipment could let them explore the world in more detail.

Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), they got an up-close look at the intricate eyes of insects, the pollen and stigma of various flowers, and explored how the human eye views the world compared to how an SEM captures images with electrons. This hands-on experience made their learning come to life in an exciting way.  The SEM also enabled students to gain insight into how subatomic particles are applied in real-world technologies.

There were many excited gasps and insightful questions throughout the week and both the staff and students are grateful for having this experience made available to us.
