Diversity Counselling and the Breathing Space Programme

Cornelia Tiepa —

This year Hamilton Girls’ High was approached by Diversity Counselling, a Charitable Trust, who are passionate about making a difference to the community.

Diversity Counselling focuses on helping people to overcome challenges in order to lead a more fulfilled life. We were fortunate enough to have them deliver the Breathing Space programme in Term 4. The programme aimed to equip students to:

  • Develop intercultural awareness and positive cultural identity

  • Develop a sense of belonging and connection

  • Learn skills to handle difficult emotions and to develop resiliency

  • Develop a positive healthy relationship with self and others

  • Increase self-worth and overall well-being.

Hargun, one of our dedicated students in the programme gave a rave review about Breathing Space:

“In the Breathing Space Programme, it was really enjoyable to do the guided breathing exercises, as they helped us develop a deeper understanding of our breathing and its impact on our well-being. The group discussions were also a highlight, allowing us to share experiences and support one another in a friendly atmosphere. It was not only fun, but also a fantastic way to meet new friends and learn effective breathing techniques. The experience and the valuable skills gained can be used in stressful situations and help you to focus. The exercises we learnt were very helpful and effective in the exam period. It was great to be a part of the Breathing Space Programme”.

A huge mihi to Kaoru Tsukigi, Vanisri Mills and the staff at Diversity Counselling for giving our ELLs, refugee and migrant girls, this awesome opportunity.
