Is Pride Power?

Katelyn Graham —

A formidable and complex force. A double-edged sword that can wield great power for good or bad. Pride is a deep rooted emotion that stems from the sense of accomplishment, self-worth, or a connection to one’s identity. When used with wisdom and humility, pride can become a driving force for positive change and personal growth. However, when allowed to run astray it can lead to destructive consequences.

It’s an aura that radiates off of us. A loud roar that erupts from our hearts. It pushes us to be better, to continue evolving. When we take pride in our accomplishments and abilities, we exude confidence and determination. This self-assuredness not only empowers us to reach out to our full potential but also inspires others to follow suit. It is fuel for our fire.

On the surface pride is a positive quality and integral part of our personalities. Yet just beneath the surface lies a darker and more dangerous force. One that takes control. Blinding us, and distancing us from our support people. It's isolating and cold. Taking over our personas and changing our very identity. It creates a divisive atmosphere pitting us against each other and erodes cooperation and teamwork. The minute we submit to pride, we limit ourselves from growth, relying on only our existing abilities and knowledge.

It's a catalyst for achievement. Pride pushes us to invest ourselves fully in what we want to gain, forcing us to strive for our goals. Those who wield pride for good set themselves apart from others. Their commitment to excellence allows them to overcome obstacles with unwavering determination. Pride ignites a fire within us that allows us to excel and evolve.

Left unchecked, pride can lead to suffocating arrogance and hubris. Becoming so consumed by pride we may lose sight of our humility and empathy. Pride can overwhelm us and cause us to believe that we have nothing left to learn, that we can’t be better than who we are right now.

This is not the case. As humans we are constantly competing amongst ourselves for the chance to be the best. The champion of society. Even those of us who seem less competitive are also striving for a goal, aspiring for something in their lives. Pride is a formidable and complex force. A double-edged sword that can wield great power for good or bad.

Excessive pride stumps us and hinders us from growth, but too little and we can’t succeed. Where can we find a healthy balance? How?

Pride is a formidable and complex force. But is it power?
