Cyclone Dovi "Hits" HGHS

Karlene Verryt —

The remnants of Cyclone Dovi are still seen on Hamilton city streets. Unfortunately, our kura was not left unscathed.

Despite arborists regularly maintaining and removing unsafe trees around our campus, the Cyclone was a definite "step up" and took down one of the large "3 Sister" trees at the entrance to our school.  This tree landed on the Malins building, but thankfully the scaffolding erected for the painting works did protect the building to a large extent.  However, there was significant roof damage and damage to windows. The arborists noted that the other two trees would be unstable now that the middle tree had fallen, so they unfortunately also had to be felled.

Also hit was G Block where one tree caused some minor damage, and there was a broken window in Hepburn.

The school immediately contacted the MOE Emergency Response Team, and HGHS staff attended onsite to work with the fantastic group of contractors that came in on a stormy Sunday to ensure all was done to keep the school safe.

A big thank you to ArborTree, Haslam Electrical, Foster Maintain, WSP, Complete Combustion and Rapid Fencing who attended immediately.

Also a big thank you to the HGHS timetabling team who have been able to accommodate most classes (with classrooms in Hepburn also being out at present). However, it is pleasing that we are investigating some temporary classroom options whilst the repairs are being undertaken, with the support of the MOE Property team.

We will now be working through the repairs in conjunction with our Project Managers, WSP.
