HGHS win Waikato U16 Doubles Title

Robyn Ferrier —

Lucy Mills and Holly Parker competed at the Waikato Secondary Schools' Tennis Championship at Lugton Park, on 29-30 March, and came away on top.

Four girls represented HGHS this year: Lucy Mills 11Mc, Brooke Laskey 10Ms, Alice Mccarthny 10Mc, and Holly Parker 9Ws, with Mr Peter Farrell as the teacher in charge.

In the Singles competition, Holly Parker finished third in the Juniors, with a 2-2 record; two of her matches went to nail-biting Super-Tiebreaker deciders. Lucy Mills, also with a 2-2 record, finished fourth in the U16 singles. Alice McCarthy got better and better, losing her first two, and winning her final match in a thrilling Super-Tiebreaker. In the Doubles competition on Wednesday, Alice and Brooke fought gamely but lost all three matches. In the U16 division, Lucy and Holly won all their matches and were crowned Champions of the Waikato. Congratulations to them for that fine achievement.

The road to Lucy Mills' and Holly Parker's victory:

Round 1: defeated Diocesan School for Girls 4-1, 4-0;

Round 2 (semifinal) defeated St Peter's School Cambridge 4-3, 4-0;

Final: Defeated St Paul's Collegiate 0-4, 4-2, 10-7.

Lucy and Holly showed great character to come back from that first set loss; they held their nerve and played some wonderful shots, with perhaps the highlight being the very last of all, a beautifully controlled reactive drop volley by Holly. Well done to all four girls. They were a credit to the school.
