Victoria Trenwith - July 26, 2023

The combined HGHS/HBHS Kapa Haka Te Maurea Whiritoi placed first at the Tainui Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition for the first time in their history. This is also the first time that a Mainstream team has won.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari, he toa takitini

Success is not the work of one but the work of many

Te Maurea Whiritoi performed at the Tainui regional competition as part of the Ngaa Paki o Matariki Festival at Claudelands Arena in July, where the team placed first for the first time in their history. This is an absolutely stellar achievement, and is testimony to the incredible mahi that has been invested by each student in the roopuu. A special thank you to Matua Toti West, Whaea Frankie West, alumni Whaea Pani Potts, Whaea Jaedyn Randell, Whaea Puhirere Akuhata, and Hawaiki Te Aho for their efforts in composing the performance material and tutoring, mentoring, and leading our Kapa Haka students. This achievement sees Te Maurea Whiritoi go through to the national competition. We are looking forward to this with much anticipation and excitement!
