Balance

Lily Anderson —

Everyone dreams of having that perfect balance, but what is a perfect balance? The struggle for students today is finding a balance where they can enjoy both a healthy school and social life. The key to it all you ask ? - being able to understand when enough is enough.

Most would say that a perfect balance is 50/50, when in reality this may not be the case. Everyone has their own perspective on this ‘perfect balance’. Some might say that there is no balance, they are just living life, while others are set on finding it.

We live in this cycle that's forever evolving and the only person that can change it is you. You have to take a step back and reflect not only on your priorities but the choices you make. Oprah Winfrey once said “You can have it all. You just can't have it all at once.”

Growing as a person is what leads us to understanding when enough is enough. Nobody knows you better than you do. You have to listen to your body and emotions as they tend to tell you the truth. Experts say that maintaining balance means to sleep and eat well, exercise regularly and to unplug every now and then. In order to balance it all, we also have to learn to say no. Dolly Parton said “Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life.” The same can be said for school and social life. School-life balance is important for optimal academic performance. Students often prioritise academic learning at the expense of their personal general health and well-being, relationships and exercise which can lead to a decline in academic performance.

Balance doesn’t have to be hard, it's a bit of a juggling act but it can be as simple as organising what's important to you by using your values and beliefs. Let your conscience be your guide.

There is life outside of school and school outside of life!
