Athletics Day 2023

Jamie Ogilvy —

Students, teachers, and parents alike are still buzzing with excitement after the Hamilton Girls’ High School Athletics Day held at Porritt Stadium.

The event, which took place on 24th February, saw hundreds of students from across the school competing in a variety of track and field events, as well as House relays.

The event kicked off with the athletes from each House taking part in the March Past down the 100m straight. It was judged on colour, chanting and participation and there was great cheering from the crowd. Heads House were the winners followed by Wilson in 2nd place and MacDiarmid in 3rd.

From there, it was non-stop action, as students raced down the track in the sprints, flew through the air in the long jump, and hurled the shot-put with impressive force. The stands were packed with spectators cheering on their classmates, while teachers and volunteers manned the various stations, ensuring everything ran smoothly.

One of the highlights of the day was the House relays which saw teams of students battling it out for the title of fastest House. The event was fiercely contested - for Juniors, Edgecumbe took first place followed by Campbell and Macdiarmid. The Intermediate section saw Heads finishing in first place, with Edgecumbe coming in second followed by Campbell. For the Seniors, Heads again placed first, Campbell second and Edgecumbe third, closely followed  by Macdiarmid then Wilson.

A special mention to the two record breakers for the day. Losaline Lose who broke a school record in the discus, throwing a massive 43.8m and Zarah Rattray breaking the Intermediate Hurdles record with 12.37s. The school is very proud of both of you, we commend your efforts and achievements.

Throughout the day, there was plenty of food, drinks, and snacks available for purchase, with proceeds going towards HGHS sporting funds. The event was a great opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to come together as a community, and the positive energy and sense of achievement was awesome to see.

Congratulations to everyone involved!
