1APE Taupiri Maunga & Kayaking Trip

Tiahomoana Morgan & Whitu Gridelli-Muru —

On Monday 25th March the Level 1 Active Wellbeing class went on a haerenga to Taupiri Maunga.

We left school around 9:10am and arrived at Taupiri Maunga twenty minutes later. We had karakia and then off we went. We were excited, happy, energetic and just relieved that we didn't have to sit in a class all day. We got to the halfway point (what Ms said was the halfway point but was really just a quarter of the way) and sat down and had a break. The last 10 minutes were a killer as the stairs were steep with lots of twists and turns. When the last students of our class finally arrived at the top we had a little snack, talked about the legend of Taupiri and just chilled for a wee bit before heading back down the maunga. We went a different way down and some of us disturbed a wasp nest. We all got back to the van around lunchtime, treated the wasp stings and washed our hands/sprinkled water before we left for kayaking.

When we arrived at Lake Puketirini we met the other AWE class as they were just finishing their time kayaking. As soon as they left we got into groups of 11 plus the two teachers. We put on our life vest, ran through the instructions and had some reminders on what to do in the water. Faith (our instructor) taught us a way of paddling called the "sweep turn" which we used to kayak towards a purple flag. Once we arrived we got into a raft and Whitu and Shadae decided to run across the rafts when they were lined up (Whitu crawled). Following this we did a roll out which was more difficult in the lake than in the school pool. It was a cool and fun day with our classmates and teachers.
