Growing our kaiako

Rebecca Early —

Great kaiako are a key to a great kura. It is vital therefore that we invest time and resources into growing and supporting our kaiako.

With the move to the Orange setting we were able to meet in person to run our professional learning sessions on Tuesday afternoons and also our NCEA Change Teacher Only Day in Week 2. Whaea Mere engaged us all in her Tapasā session, getting us up and about doing a traditional sasa. The following week we were privileged to have Alex Barnes come to speak to us about the importance of māna orite mō te mātauranga Māori and honouring te tiriti. This presentation was followed by our Deputy Principal, Toti West, sharing his vision for giving equal status to mātauranga Māori in our kura. Several of our kaiako also ran workshops tailored to the NCEA change package - literacy and numeracy, and goal setting. Collectively contributing to a vision for our kura is an exciting space!
