Marie Gordon —

Our Principal, Ms Marie Gordon, encourages us with some key well-being messages.

Today, our young women face many issues that impact on their health and well-being. The issues that affect our students are vast. We have seen a rise in anxiety and poor mental health. There are many other challenges, including the negative impact of social media. At HGHS, our focus is to move from being reactive to proactive - to make health and well-being a core part of our school.

Health and well-being in girls’ schools encompass more than counselling services, sport, involvement in the Arts and short term wellness plans. In the current educational landscape, a strong health and well-being programme will teach students to manage stress, focus on well-being, learn to be resilient and to practise mindfulness. In addition, we hope that focusing on well-being will give our students the tools to develop meaningful relationships and effectively manage conflict.

A strong physical and healthy well-being programme will focus on improving self-esteem to encourage a healthy body image and lifestyle choices. Led by Deputy Principal, Gráinne O’Mahoney, our hauora team have developed a series of workshops that will be available for our Year 13 students. This series will be the first of many targeted well-being workshops for our school. It certainly will be “watch this space”.

Finally, I want to acknowledge each young woman who contributes to making our school a better place; those who exhibit the best of human qualities, those who excel on the sporting field, within our performing and visual arts, or in the classroom. Please be reassured that you make a significant contribution to the culture, tone and standards of Hamilton Girls’ High School and I am forever grateful to you.
