Redefining Greatness

Rachael Le Miere —

This article explores the inspiring journeys of individuals with neurodiversity, showcasing how they transformed challenges into strengths on their path to success!

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein is often referred to as one of the greatest scientists of all time. It is assumed that he may have had Dyslexia due to his delayed speech development, difficulty with language/writing, and his strengths in creativity and unconventional thinking. However, Einstein used what were commonly seen as difficulties back then, as his greatest strengths. Einstein famously said: “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” Diagnosed or not, Einstein became more than what he was presumed to be and grew into one of the world's greatest scientists.

Simone Biles

Simone Biles holds the record for the most World Championship medals (30) and the most World gold medals (23) in gymnastics history, along with 11 Olympic medals. She has also been diagnosed with ADHD. Biles states that ADHD is “nothing to be ashamed of.” She has been complimented for using her platform to advocate against the stigma surrounding ADHD and other neurodiversities, as well as destigmatising the medication. Biles challenges the myth that anyone diagnosed with ADHD is an underachiever or has behavioural issues. She is the living example to follow your dreams no matter the difficulties that come your way!

Greta Thumburg

Greta Thunberg, a prominent climate change activist, has faced significant challenges throughout her journey, including her diagnoses of OCD and Asperger's syndrome. Despite these struggles, she has worked diligently to overcome them, transforming her perceived limitations into strengths. Thunberg views her neurodiversity as a "superpower," which empowers her to advocate passionately for the environment. Her experiences highlight the difficulties many individuals on the autism spectrum encounter, such as challenges with social skills, limited social interactions, and unusual communication patterns. Greta's journey serves as an inspiring testament to resilience, demonstrating that those with autism can make a profound impact on the world. By embracing her unique perspective, she has become a role model for others, showing that with determination and self-acceptance, it is possible to turn struggles into powerful advocacy.

Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne, a renowned model and actress, has openly shared her experiences with dyspraxia, a condition that affects her coordination and motor skills. Throughout her career, she has faced various challenges, including difficulties with tasks that require fine motor control and she also struggles with organisation. However, rather than allowing these obstacles to define her, Delevingne has embraced her dyspraxia as part of her unique identity. She has used her platform to raise awareness about the condition, demonstrating that it does not diminish her talent or potential. By sharing her journey, she has become an inspiring figure for many, particularly those who face similar challenges. Delevingne's resilience and determination serve as a powerful reminder that embracing one's differences can lead to personal growth and success, encouraging others to pursue their passions regardless of the hurdles they may encounter.

Tim Burton

Tim Burton is a well-known and highly awarded film maker. While he has never been formally diagnosed with autism, he has often spoken about traits he relates to, which are common among individuals on the autism spectrum e.g. preferring solitary activities, experiencing challenges with social interaction, having heightened sensory sensitivities. Tim has mentioned many of these traits in relation to his own experiences. He hasn't let these challenges define him. As a child he often felt excluded, unaccepted and lacking in social skills, so he chose to find himself within film, music and art. Through his creative and distinctive style, he often portrays the experiences of individuals who feel misunderstood or marginalised, as seen in his 1990 film, Edward Scissorhands. His art helps create a safe space for countless people. Like many on the autism spectrum, Burton is known for his unique perspective, intelligence, diligence, and humour. His ability to see the world differently has allowed him to create meaningful creative works that help make the world a better place for many.

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is one of the top music artists of this decade, with millions of fans around the world. She also has been diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, a neurological condition that causes involuntary movements or sounds. Billie has openly shared her experiences with Tourette Syndrome, explaining that while many of her tics may go unnoticed by others, they can be exhausting and persistent for her. Despite this, she embraces her condition as part of who she is. People with Tourette syndrome, like Billie, are often known for their resilience, empathy, focus, and strong problem-solving abilities. Billie is now an advocate for those with Tourette syndrome, helping to normalise conversations about it and clear up common misconceptions. Despite the challenges presented by her condition, she serves as an inspiration and continues to create music and advocate for others, helping to create a more inclusive and understanding society.
